Dr. Achintya K (Achin) Bhowmik is the chief technology officer and executive vice president of engineering at Starkey, a privately-held medical devices company with over 5,000 employees and operations in over 100 countries. Responsible for the company’s technology strategy, research and development, engineering and program management organizations, he leads the drive to transform hearing aids into multifunctional communication and health devices.
Dr. Bhowmik also serves on the faculty of Stanford University as an adjunct professor at the Stanford School of Medicine, where he advises research and lectures in the areas of sensory augmentation, computational perception, cognitive neuroscience, and intelligent systems. He is also an affiliate faculty member of the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence and the Wu Tsai Neurosciences Institute.
Previously, Dr. Bhowmik was the vice president and general manager of Perceptual Computing at Intel, where he was responsible for the R&D, engineering, operations, and businesses in the areas of 3D sensing and interactive computing, computer vision and artificial intelligence, autonomous robots and drones, and immersive virtual and augmented reality devices.
Dr. Bhowmik serves as an industry representative for the U.S. FDA Digital Health Advisory Committee. He is a member of the board of trustees for the National Captioning Institute, and serves on the board of directors for Mojo Vision, Astranu, and OpenCV. He is also on the board of advisors for Biomedical Engineering at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, and the Fung Institute for Engineering Leadership at the University of California, Berkeley.
He has held adjunct and guest professor positions at the University of California, Berkeley, the Liquid Crystal Institute of Kent State University, Kyung Hee University in Seoul, and the Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar. He received his Bachelor of Technology from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, PhD from Auburn University, and completed the Executive Accelerator Program at Stanford University. He has authored over 200 publications, including three books and over 80 patents globally.
Dr. Bhowmik is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the Society for Information Display (SID), the Asia-Pacific Artificial Intelligence Association (AAIA), and the International Artificial Intelligence Industry Alliance (AIIA). His other recognitions include the Artificial Intelligence Excellence award from the Business Intelligence Group, the Gold Globee award for “Most Innovative Person of the Year in Healthcare”, the Misties Award as one of the Top 20 Leaders in Intelligent & Connected Devices, Top 25 Healthcare Technology CTOs by the Healthcare Technology Report, Industrial Distinguished Leader award from the Asia-Pacific Signal and Information Processing Association, TIME’s Best Inventions, and the Red Dot Design award.
